As McDermitt noted, Eugene’s a different story: “I can only say that Eugene being in the shadow of Negan is not a good thing. The group was pretty lazy about Daryl’s captivity, too-but at least we can shrug that one off knowing that Daryl’s taking care of himself. Shouldn’t that have been a little closer to the front of the group’s brain, so to speak? “I was pissed off, man.” The actor noted that it took a strikingly long time in the mid-season premiere before anyone mentioned Eugene. “I was pissed!” McDermitt said with a laugh, speaking about Eugene’s abandonment. Why has no one tried to rescue Eugene? According to actor Josh McDermitt, who spoke with Vanity Fair ahead of this week’s episode, that might be a tactical error on their part. The funny thing is, Rick and the group don’t seem too preoccupied with finding their comrade. In return, Negan hauled Eugene off to the Sanctuary as his newest prisoner. Still, Eugene has proven over the last few seasons that he can be very useful to the group-and even brave, as he demonstrated when he stepped up and took responsibility for making the bullet that pierced Negan’s bat, Lucille. The phony scientist is cowardly, manipulative, and-generally-bent on self-preservation above all else. As much as most Walking Dead fans would like to think they’d be as badass as Rick Grimes during a zombie apocalypse-brave, cunning, resourceful-the truth is that most of us would probably turn out more like Eugene Porter.
